ORALMEDIC FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

About ORALMEDIC

What is ORALMEDIC?

ORALMEDIC is a single-application treatment for canker sores and mouth ulcers. It uses patented HYBENX Desiccation Shock Technology to seal the ulcer, stop pain immediately, and promote healing within 3 to 5 days. It is classified as a Class I medical device and is available in Canada without a prescription.

How is ORALMEDIC different from Orajel, Anbesol, or other numbing gels?

Most mouth ulcer products use benzocaine to temporarily numb pain. The numbness wears off in 1 to 2 hours, and you need to reapply multiple times per day. These products don't heal the ulcer — they only mask symptoms.

ORALMEDIC works differently. It treats the ulcer in a single application by sealing damaged tissue and forming a protective barrier. Pain relief is immediate and lasting because the barrier covers exposed nerve endings. It also promotes faster healing (3 to 5 days vs. 12 to 14 days untreated).

Is ORALMEDIC a drug?

No. ORALMEDIC is classified as a Class I medical device. It works through a physical and chemical barrier mechanism (desiccation and tissue sealing), not through pharmacological action. It does not contain benzocaine or any anaesthetic drug.

What is HYBENX?

HYBENX is the patented active technology in ORALMEDIC, developed by EPIEN Medical Inc. It is a concentrated sulfonated phenolic compound that works by selectively removing water from damaged tissue and surface bacteria. This creates a protective seal over the wound. HYBENX is also used in professional dental products for managing oral lesions and periodontal disease.

Using ORALMEDIC

How do I apply ORALMEDIC?

  1. Dry the ulcer thoroughly with the included cotton bud (this is critical for effectiveness)
  2. Snap the coloured ring on the applicator to release the solution
  3. Hold the applicator at a 45-degree angle and roll it over the ulcer for 5 to 10 seconds
  4. Rinse your mouth with water and spit
  5. Wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking

Does it hurt when you apply ORALMEDIC?

Yes, there is a brief stinging sensation lasting 5 to 15 seconds. This is the active ingredient treating damaged tissue — it stops once the protective barrier forms over the ulcer. Most users find the brief discomfort acceptable given the immediate and lasting relief that follows.

What if ORALMEDIC doesn't work the first time?

The most common reason for reduced effectiveness is moisture on the ulcer surface. Make sure the ulcer is completely dry before applying. If the first swab doesn't fully cover the ulcer, you can reapply with the second swab in the same session. Do not re-treat the same ulcer on a different day.

What is the white mark that appears after using ORALMEDIC?

The white mark is called an eschar — a protective seal formed by the HYBENX solution. It means the treatment is working. The eschar covers exposed nerve endings (stopping pain) and protects the ulcer from food, drinks, and bacteria while your body heals the tissue underneath. It will gradually disappear as the ulcer heals over 3 to 5 days.

Can I use ORALMEDIC on multiple ulcers?

Yes. Use one applicator swab per ulcer. Each box contains 4 swabs, so you can treat up to 4 ulcers per box. For more than 4 ulcers, you will need an additional box.

Can I eat and drink after using ORALMEDIC?

Wait at least 30 minutes after application to allow the protective barrier to set. After that, you can eat and drink normally. The barrier protects the ulcer from food and temperature irritation while it heals.

Can I use ORALMEDIC with braces or dental work?

Yes, ORALMEDIC is generally compatible with braces, retainers, and other dental appliances. Apply the swab directly to the ulcer, avoiding contact with metal brackets where possible.

Safety & Who It's For

Who can use ORALMEDIC?

ORALMEDIC is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over. Do not use if you have a known allergy to sulphur. Consult your healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Is ORALMEDIC safe?

Yes. ORALMEDIC is a Health Canada compliant Class I medical device. It does not contain benzocaine, avoiding the methemoglobinemia warnings associated with benzocaine-based products. The active ingredients are applied topically in a controlled, single-use dose. ORALMEDIC has been available in over 30 countries including Canada, the UK, Australia, and the EU.

How should I store ORALMEDIC?

Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
